Stan Wright, DeSoto Plant Foreman

How long have you been with the company?

39 Years

Job Responsibilities:

I manage the overall plant operations, including the planning, production and maintenance. I also manage the crew who runs the plant, overseeing training and work schedules.

How did you get into this career, and what led you to this company?

I got my start working for a Nashville-based company for 5 years. That company sold the plant where I worked at to Lehman-Roberts Co. nearly 40 years ago and I’ve been here ever since.

What is your favorite part about working at Lehman-Roberts Co./Memphis Stone & Gravel Co.?

I love the challenge I get from working with our younger guys. I really enjoy seeing a new employee come on who doesn’t have a clue as to what we really do. When most people think of a gravel pit, they think of a hole in the ground. But, when you explain it to a new employee, their eyes light up.

How have the company’s core values and overall culture impacted your role or inspired passion in what you do?

I don’t think that it so much inspired me as it just confirmed everything I was taught growing up. When the company first defined the Core Four, I realized these were values I learned from my parents. They taught me to respect other people and treat them well (Humility and Relationships). They taught me to always look for ways to better myself (Continuous Improvement). They taught me to respect things that belong to others and take better care of them than I did my own things (Stewardship). Since the company defined those values, our team watches out for each other more and they watch out for the equipment more. Every morning during our huddle-up meeting, someone says “we’re family”. Those core values put that impact there.

What is the best piece of advice you have received during your career?

I have received a lot of good advice along the way. My first supervisor was great; he was strict but great. He told me to always treat everyone fair and do your best at whatever you do.

What do you look forward to doing when you retire?

I’ll be spending more time with my family. I have a 6-year-old daughter and I really look forward to spending time with her and at her school functions.
